Mystery Project

I have been charged with building one of these. What do you think it is?

I have been given my first commission, by a work colleague of mine. The item that he needs, although ubiquitous in his homeland, is something of a rarity around these parts. I must confess that I had never heard of or seen such a thing until he brought it up in conversation one day last week.

Since I am this thing is so unusual to me, he brought one in to show me (see above). He has it on loan from a fellow countryman, but he has allowed me to bring it home to photograph and take some measurements.

The commission itself is not specific. All he has said is that he wants his to be a more interesting design than this one, ideally utilising more than one type of wood, and not “run of the mill”. When I asked him to elaborate what he had in mind for the design, he said “whatever floats your boat”, or words to that effect – I won’t repeat what he actually said!

Anyway, as soon as the Sawyer’s Bench project is done and dusted, which won’t be long now, I’ll get to work on a design and do a series of posts about it. I’ve got a couple of ideas, but nothing concrete just yet.

Anyway, you might be wondering what the item is. Well, I’m not going to tell you…

…not yet anyway. I thought it would be interesting to see if any of you know what it is. If you do, let me know in the comments. I’d welcome any advice or design ideas you might have as well. When I’ve come up with a design I’ll post it with an explanation of what the item is. Until then, get your thinking caps on.

  1. Looks to me like a tobacco cutter. Tobacco growing in the UK would appear to be out of vogue, as it is in certain parts of the US, although according to a book I picked up in a job-lot in Exeter it was encouraged as a money-maker in previous years. Perhaps your colleague wants to use it in the kitchen to chop herbs?
