Fitting hinges – Dovetail box #4

Once the glue was dry and the lid all finished, it was time to fit the hinges. I began with the lid first, and then moved on to the box. As with hanging doors, it is easier this way round.

The hinges recesses were achieved in a pretty standard way – several small chisel cuts, then paring down to final depth.

I’m fairly happy with the results, although I can think of a few things I might do differently in the future.

Now for a suitable finish. I’m thinking about shellac. I haven’t found a suitable source of shellac flakes yet, so I’ll make do with sanding sealer, and I’ll probably follow up with a coat or two of beeswax. One more post and we’ll be done on this project I reckon.
